airBaltic to Build a New Terminal at Riga Airport

The Latvian government approved the construction of a new terminal by the Latvian low-cost airline airBaltic.

airBaltic president and CEO Bertolt Flick: “The infrastructure of the Riga International Airport has already reached its design capacity limits, and so a new terminal is acutely needed to accomodate the growing passenger numbers.”

Hong Kong airport opens new North Satellite Concourse

To ensure the same level of service for the growing number of passengers flying on smaller aircraft, the Airport Authority has invested over HK$1 billion in the construction of a new North Satellite Concourse (NSC). The new concourse, which will be soft-opened on 17 December, will ensure that Hong Kong International Airport continues to meet its performance pledge of embarking and disembarking more than 90% of its passengers by air bridges. The NSC is designed to serve more than five million passengers a year at the initial stage.

Singapore Changi Airport Implements New Taxi Management System

Taxi drivers now have a new tool to help them better gauge the demand for taxis across the four terminals at Singapore Changi Airport. Commissioned today, the new Taxi Management System at Changi Airport will improve the distribution of taxis at Changi by supporting the matching of taxi supply with passenger demand. A reduction in the average queuing time for passengers and especially for taxi drivers is envisaged.

Batavia Air to Start Flights from Indonesia to Changi Airport

Indonesian carrier Batavia Air started flights to Singapore Changi Airport on 25 November 2009. Batavia will operate daily flights between Singapore and the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Semarang. The eighth new airline to commence operations at Changi Airport this year, Batavia’s new route signals its confidence in the traffic potential between Singapore and Indonesia.

Singapore Changi Airport Welcomes Kingfisher Airlines

Changi Airport Group received Kingfisher Airlines at Singapore Changi Airport when flight IT029 from Mumbai landed at Terminal 3 at 0705hrs. Kingfisher Airlines will operate daily flights between Singapore and Mumbai. Flight IT029 departs Mumbai at 2305hrs and arrives in Singapore at 0705hrs. The return flight, IT030, leaves Singapore at 1015hrs, arriving in Mumbai at 1305hrs. These flights increase the number of flights on the Singapore – Mumbai route to 70 per week, with five airlines, including Kingfisher Airlines, plying the route.

Park Inn Hotel Coming to Dubai Airport Free Zone

The Rezidor Hotel Group announced that it will operate Park Inn Dubai Airport Free Zone. The property featuring 312 rooms is scheduled to open in 2012. "With 32 airport hotels in operation and under development Rezidor is Europe’s leading airport hotel operator – we are delighted to extend this field to the Middle East now", comments Kurt Ritter, President & CEO of Rezidor. Besides the Park Inn Dubai Airport Free Zone the group also develops the Radisson Blu Hotel Cairo Heliopolis which will open in late 2009.

Heathrow Airport to Construct New Terminal 2

The £1 billion Terminal 2 will become the new home for Star Alliance airlines and will provide an estimated 20 million passengers every year with a spacious and modern airport facility.

Passengers departing Terminal 2 will find 11,300m2 of floor space, accommodating self-service check-in machines, fast-bag drops, traditional check-in desks and 15 security search lanes.

In a two-level departure lounge, ten-metre high windows will provide excellent views of Heathrow's airfield and the nine new aircraft parking stands, a third of which are configured to accommodate a new generation of aircraft such as the A380.

Accor to Manage Novotel Hotel at Auckland Airport

A joint venture was signed today between Accor, Tainui Group Holdings and Auckland International Airport (AIAL), to develop and operate a 4-star plus 260 room Novotel hotel at Auckland Airport. The hotel is scheduled to be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Wyndham Opens Hotel at Montreal Airport

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts has opened the 486-room Wyndham Montreal Aeroport hotel, just minutes from Pierre Trudeau International Airport.

Located at 12505 Cote de Liesse, the upscale hotel merges the convenience of an airport hotel with the function space of a conference center and amenities of a resort.

Emirates Opens Airport Lounge in Johannesburg

Emirates has launched its first airport lounge in Africa at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, bringing the total number of lounges the airline has established across its network to 23.

The Dubai-based airline has also unveiled plans to introduce three more Emirates Lounges to cater for its First and Business Class passengers and frequent flyers over the next 12 months, to be located at Manchester, Birmingham and Hamburg airports.
